Like every other industry, the car rental industry has it myths as well. Those are stories about rent-a-cars that we can often hear, and that are commonly used in everyday life. However, they are not true and that’s why we call it myths! Here is our top 10 rent-a-car myths.
Top 10 myths about rent-a-car:
This is one of the most common rent-a-car myths that probably all of us have heard somewhere. However, it’s wrong. Although almost 25% of drivers who were surveyed about rent-a-car insurance believe that color of the car is a factor when they insure their rented vehicles, the truth is that red cars don’t cost more to insure. Color is not a factor in determining the insurance rate, so that is a myth.
Contrary to the popular opinion, it does matter where you get your insurance. Each car insurance company has its own rating policy system and uses different factors to determine premiums. The costs of a ticket, an accident, or simply being the new driver vary from company to company and search for the best rent-a-car option, or including rent-a-car insurances in the regular car insurance, may lead to certain benefits.
Are you afraid that your brand new shining rent-a-car will get stolen? You shouldn’t be. According to researches, thieves more often look for easier prey, older cars. In 2011, among the most stolen cars were Honda Accord 94, and Honda Civic 95, as well as Dodge Caravan 00, Acura Integra 94 or Ford Taurus 99. Moreover, thieves are picking on cars that can be sold for used parts.
Being a new driver is not an advantage when renting a car, yet the higher rates can be avoided. Certain companies do have discounts that can enable new driver to get the lower rates, however, it is recommended that you have some above-average quality, such as being a student with good grades or have taken driver education courses. These things can get you discounts even without having a lot of driving experience.
Waiting for the ticket or accident record to expire at the end of the third year does not work in the same way with insurance companies. They will stop charging you for your misbehavior only at the end of the third year upon the renewal of your policy, due to the fact that they had started to charge that ticket or that accident later.
Enjoying a fast car does not mean more unpleasant chit-chat with the police. Traffic violations are in most cases connected with different types of cars, such as coupes, sedans and SUVs, with the Mercedes Benz SL convertible being the only sports car included in the 2010 “most violations” list. Therefore, your rent-a-car insurance rate will not depend on your choice of a sports car, but on your own driving history and the insurance loss history of the model.
Insurance companies are not inclined to do anything at random, and that includes increasing the rates without some solid ground to do so. Renting a car will start to cost you more only when you start getting tickets or getting into accidents, and when the statistics change and your insurance is up- or down-graded on the risk level ladder. Furthermore, it is usual for your insurance rate to modified upon renewal of the policy, and not before expiry date of an old one.
After having an accident, police report determined whose fault it was. However, the insurance company will check again, according to its own rules of fault determination. Of course, insurance companies require the police report before coming to a decision, and will usually use the police-provided facts, but in the end the conclusion may be different.
Think twice before crossing any borders and check with your rent-a-car company before you enter another country. Some insurance policies will cover you in the US as well as Canada, but may not cover you for your short trip to Mexico. Sometimes it is possible to buy required insurances at the border crossings.
Having an comprehensive and collision coverage for your own car does not mean you are entitled to having a rental car if the need arises, should your car get stolen or damaged in an accident to the point of being unusable. When agreeing the coverage, you should check this point and easily include it in your final contract. Usually, rental reimbursement coverage will cost you only a buck or two a month, but you should be aware that in most cases there are limits for rental cars: only a certain number of days is covered, and only a certain maximum amount is covered as well.
